Council Bluffs, Iowa (KETV)-Velma McElderry has experienced two pandemics.
When she was just a toddler at the age of two in 1918, she and her family survived the global flu epidemic.
At the age of 104, a woman in Council Bluffs received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Well, I don’t want to stop getting some kind of illness,” she said from her home on Monday.
McKelderly has been quarantined at home since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. Her daughter, Suppeters, took her out for the first time on Saturday and took her first shot.
“It wasn’t too bad,” said McElderly. She said her arm didn’t hurt either.
“It’s longevity. She’s a trooper. She’s great,” Peters said.
Peters said his mother cooked her own breakfast. Peters stops for lunch, and his son prepares for dinner and prepares for his bed.
McElderry grew up in Olmitz, Iowa, just south of the town. Her father worked there in a coal mine.
“I didn’t do much there, whether in the mine or on the farm,” she said.
McElderry was just a toddler when the 1918 flu dominated the world and killed 50 million people.
Her family was spared, but Peters said she repeated the story of her mother talking about living in that era.
“She talked a bit about it, how her mom talked about devastation and how it can wipe out the whole family,” Peters said.
The McElderry family, consisting of three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, sought to keep the couple active on creative visits during this modern pandemic.

She also wants to return to her volunteer job at Methodist Jenny Edmundson Hospital. There, I worked in a gift shop for the past 30 years.
