Vigils held across the country in memory of South Dakota actor Cole Brings Plenty

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – On March 31, actor Cole Brings Plenty, best known for his appearances in the Yellowstone spin-off 1923, disappeared. Less than a week later, the 27-year-old's body was found April 5 in a wooded area outside Kansas City. It wasn't far from his unattended car.

This heartbreaking loss is felt by Native American communities across the country, especially in South Dakota, where Brings Plenty was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

This really hurt my heart because I have children with the same last name and I couldn't even imagine seeing their names in the newspapers the same way Coles' name was in the newspapers, a said Shaina Yellowback, an event organizer.

Vigils were held across the country Sunday, including one at Van Eps Park in downtown Sioux Falls. It was just one of many ways Native Americans came together to mourn and honor the memory of a promising young actor and a tribal member lost too soon.

“That's the best thing we can do as indigenous people is to really raise awareness about each other, because these things shouldn't be happening,” Yellowback explained.

As of Sunday, no cause of death has been identified, but a recent release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said there was no foul play involved in Brings Plenty's death. This still leaves friends and family with even more questions and they are hoping for answers and a conclusion soon.

Justice, for sure, Yellowback said when asked how they hoped to reach a conclusion. I know a lot of our loved ones are missing and not fully investigated like any other relative would, honestly. I just want more awareness, in-depth investigations, and to be able to look out for each other.

Brings Plenty's funeral is scheduled to take place Tuesday in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.
