There is a Dairy Queen at Altgeld Hall.
College students woke up Monday morning to legendary news, as announced by the Illini Union Board in an Instagram post that there would finally be a Dairy Queen in Altgeld Hall.
Stock up on rumors As early as 2010, while the restaurant chain was hidden in the historic building's basement, the Illini Union Board brought the short-lived Dairy Queen to Altgeld's second floor.
We do this every two years because you know the common trope that there is an Altgeld Dairy Queen, said Abby Stiefvater, president of the Illini Union board of directors. So we're kind of playing into that.
The station provided free Dilly Bars to help feed students throughout week 15 of the semester. According to Stiefvater, the event is part of the unions Last chance week, which offers students one last chance to have fun at Union.
Our main headquarters is of course the Illini Union, but we plan events throughout the year, Stiefvater said.
Emily Campos, director of marketing on the Illini Union Board of Directors, explained the process of organizing the event, which included working with the restaurant chain.
We went and got about 800 Dilly bars of all types of flavors, Campos said.
Free ice cream options for students included chocolate, cherry, butterscotch, Heath and a dairy-free option.
Campos said the pop-up Dairy Queen is proving very popular, with tons of customers passing through the building. Chocolate supplies must already be replenished before 3 p.m.
According to Campos and Stiefvater, Altgeld was happy to organize this event for the university's students.
“We've done it in the past, so they were really willing to coordinate and work with us on a certain date, and now they're here today,” Campos said.
As for the possibility of having a more permanent location in the basement of the building, Stiefvater said all students have to do is look.
You never know, Stiefvater said. How do you not know there's one down there? It can be a little difficult to find, but we promise we'll be there.
