Sir Iain Duncan Smith has compared the UK's current relationship with China to 1930s policy towards Nazi Germany.
He says: “We certainly need to be a lot stronger and tougher. [on China].
“And if you're tough on people, the lesson we learned from the 1930s is that appeasement never works.
“If you're strong, you tell them what's wrong, and you tell them you're not going to stand for it, that one day they'll probably back down.
“But if you don’t continue to take advantage of yourself, that’s our biggest problem.”
He also reiterated that the actions of the Chinese state in the Xinjiang region against Uyghur Muslims constitute “genocide” – something the House of Commons agrees with.
Beijing disputed this assessment.
Conservative MP rejects trade risks
Sir Iain was speaking following a briefing he received as an MP targeted by Chinese cyberattacks.
Another MP targeted was fellow Conservative Tim Loughton, who responded to questions about whether a tougher policy towards China would come at the expense of trade.
He said: “This threat about the impact this will have on countries' trade, if they dare to stand up and denounce China's abuses, is a fiction.
“All the countries that did this subsequently saw an increase in trade with China.
“The only time we saw a slowdown in trade between China and the UK was about eight or nine years ago, in the middle of the 'golden age' (see article 12.41) .
“It is a complete mistake to believe that if you engage China, trade and investment opportunities instantly dry up.”
