Kyriakos Mitsotakis to meet Recep Tayyip Erdogan and discuss disagreements over marine park
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 13 in Ankara.
After the end of the European summit in Brussels, Mitsotakis announced his visit to Türkiye next month.
He then spoke about Turkey's reaction to Greece's statement on the creation of marine environmental parks in the Aegean Sea.
“Greece exercises its sovereign rights in the Aegean Sea on the basis of international law and the law of the sea,” he said, adding that it was a “totally unjustified reaction on the part of Turkey”.
“We will move forward with the creation of parks, as we promised at the recent conference in Athens.”
He said he did not think that improving Greek-Turkish relations meant that Turkey's positions regarding maritime zones had automatically changed.
Asked about the conclusions of the summit on Euro-Turkish relations, the Greek Prime Minister said that these are satisfactory for both Greece and Cyprus, because they are based on the framework of previous decisions of the European Council which define the way whose EU-Turkey relations can be improved.
Regarding the crisis in the Middle East, Mitsotakis stressed that the focus was on preventing an escalation of the conflict.
“I think it is extremely important that the text of the conclusions also refers to the situation in Gaza. The crisis is such that it requires an immediate ceasefire,” he said.
