Utah Gov. Cox faces scrutiny for using photo of military cemetery with Trump in campaign email

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox came under fire Wednesday for sending a campaign email that included a photo of himself and former President Donald Trump at Arlington National Cemetery during a wreath-laying ceremony.

Federal law prohibits campaign or election-related activities at Army national military cemeteries, and that rule was widely shared ahead of Monday's ceremony, Arlington National Cemetery said Wednesday.

Cox's campaign apologized for using the photo and politicizing the funeral, which honored Utah Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover, one of 13 service members killed in an airport bombing during the withdrawal from the Afghanistan war three years ago. The email solicited donations for Cox's reelection bid.

This was not a campaign event and was not intended for use by the campaign, the governor wrote in a message on X. It did not go through the proper channels and should not have been sent.

Trump's campaign had to deal with an altercation between his staff and a cemetery worker who tried to stop the team from filming and photographing the gravesite. The former president had been invited to attend the ceremony by some of the families of fallen service members. His campaign staff had been told before their arrival and the altercation that photography would not be allowed in that part of the cemetery, a defense official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Cox recently surprised voters when he pledged his support for Trump after the president's assassination attempt in July, despite saying days earlier on CNN that he did not vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020 and would not vote for him again this year.

Cox's sudden embrace of Trump, who has not endorsed him in return, represents a puzzling departure from his carefully crafted persona as a Mitt Romney-style moderate.

His state is one of the few Republican strongholds that has given half-hearted support to Trump, whose brash style and comments about refugees and immigrants have not appealed to many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nearly half of Utah’s 3.4 million residents belong to the faith known as the Mormon Church.

The endorsement comes a month after Cox won a landslide primary victory over Phil Lyman, a staunch Trump supporter who made false claims of voter fraud after the 2020 presidential election.

Cox is expected to comfortably win re-election in November in the Republican-dominated state.

In addition to criticism in comments on his social media accounts, Cox’s November opponent, Democratic Rep. Brian King, said it was disrespectful for Trump and Cox to use a veterans memorial event as a campaign photo op. He called on the Republican governor to withdraw his support for Trump.
