Turkish journalist arrested for posting on social media about prosecutors investigating opposition mayor
A Turkish court has officially arrested journalist Furkan Karabay for social media posts linked to prosecutors investigating a mayor from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), his lawyer confirmed on Saturday. Karabay, a journalist with the 10Haber news site, was arrested on Friday after naming prosecutors from X, formerly known as Twitter, involved in a case against Ahmet Ozer, mayor of Istanbul's Esenyurt district. Ozer was arrested on October 30 for his alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group designated as a terrorist organization in Türkiye.
Court documents revealed that Karabay's posts were believed to target officials involved in the fight against terrorism. In his defense, Karabay argued that the names were already public, having been mentioned by several media outlets and by CHP leader Zgr zel, who criticized the investigation, accusing President Recep Tayyip Erdoan of orchestrating it.
Karabay's lawyer, Enes Ermaner, called the arrest illegal, arguing that a journalist was arrested for covering widely known news. Press freedom advocates and the CHP condemned the arrest. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) representative Erol Onderoglu described Karabay's detention as punitive. Turkey ranks 158th out of 180 countries in RSF's 2024 World Press Freedom Index, underscoring continued concerns over press restrictions. The Association of Progressive Journalists also expressed its strong opposition, saying that the arrest of a journalist solely for his reporting activities constitutes a serious attack on press freedom and democratic values.
