Mumbai Police receives message on WhatsApp
Mumbai: Mumbai police received a message on Saturday threatening to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an official said.
The number from which the message was sent was traced to Ajmer in Rajasthan and a police team was immediately sent there to arrest the suspect, an official said.
The WhatsApp message, received on the traffic police helpline in the early hours, mentioned two ISI agents and a plot to detonate a bomb targeting Modi, the official said.
Investigators suspect the sender is a mentally ill person or was under the influence of alcohol, but further investigation is underway, the official added.
A first information report (FIR) has been registered in relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Mumbai Traffic Police helpline has repeatedly received hoax threat messages.
Prime Minister Modi is in his third term after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power at the Centre. A former chief minister of Gujarat and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Modi became prime minister for the first time in 2014.
