Blackhawks to start training camp next week, start NHL playoffs on August 1
Chicago’s 124-day hockey drought finally ends next week.
The Blackhawks begin training camp on Monday, July 13, after the NHL and the NHL Players Association have reached a provisional agreement on a Return to Play plan and an extension of the CLA.
While partial team practice during Phase 2 of NHL’s RTP plan has been taking place in the fifth third arena for weeks, in fact, Captain Jonathan Toews was the newest player to participate in the training. Monday Monday, the announcement clears the way for the official return of hockey.
After about two weeks of training camp, the Hawks will travel to their hub city, probably Edmonton, unless the NHL unexpectedly sends the Western Conference to Toronto on July 26.
The leagues in the qualifying round of the competitions, including the 12th-placed Hawks best-of-five series against the fifth-seeded Oilers, then begin on August 1.
The data has yet to be ratified by the NHL Board of Governors and full NHLPA membership, but votes are expected to pass easily. A passing vote will also extend the current CBA to 2026, signifying a rare and encouraging sign of labor peace for a competition historically plagued by exclusions.

Players can also completely opt out of the restart. They must report the league within three days of the passing of the official CBA vote.
And COVID-19 tests become a regular part of the exercise schedule. Hawks players not yet participating in Fifth Third Arena will be tested 48 hours before participating in training and any player and person in contact with players will be tested every other day.
Media access to players is limited to Zoom interviews, although reporters are allowed inside the building.
