Pro Football Hall of Fame releases statement recognizing OJ Simpson's passing
The death of OJ Simpson has led to many different reactions. It is impossible to remember his life without acknowledging what he is best known for.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame managed to do the impossible by issuing a lengthy press release that focuses on his football career, points to his second career in acting and broadcasting, and goes to great lengths to point out that he is in Canton anchored for his contributions in the field. There is also no mention of what he is best known for.
It is appropriate to remember his many achievements as a player. But there is a significant complication to his story that cannot be ignored.
He was tried for double murder. The evidence of guilt was overwhelming. He was acquitted. He was subsequently found responsible by the civil court for the wrongful deaths of both victims. He later served nearly nine years in prison on unrelated charges.
It's unclear why the Hall of Fame decided not to even casually reference the off-field reality of Simpson's life. While his off-field behavior didn't get him removed from the Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame shouldn't pretend those things didn't happen.
For OJ Simpson, nothing is more important than the unsolved double murder that many (if not most) believe he committed, and for which a civilian jury found him responsible. His name is synonymous with that crime. The fact that he died should not change that.
We will all have a unique legacy. Simpson's legacy includes the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.
Mentioning these crimes is not a slight to Simpson. To leave them out of his obituary is to have absolutely no respect for his victims.
