UCA Tennis ends regular season with loss to FGCU
FORT MYERS, Fla. The University of Central Arkansas tennis team fell to Florida Gulf Coast on the road Sunday night in the final match of the regular season. The Bears will finish 2024 with an 11-13 record and an ASUN mark of 3-7.
The Bears' doubles play was something they could hang their hat on, but they were stifled in consecutive games. Nanoka Kazama And Harune Shigemasu had an opportunity to extend the doubles play, but the Bears' No. 1 pair was upended before they were able to do so.
With a 1-0 lead, the Eagles managed to breeze past the Bears in the singles match. Kazama got the chance to get UCA on the board and won the first set 6-3. However, the sophomore could not take command in the tiebreaker set, falling 7-6 in a hard-fought battle for second place. Sumomo Hamanaga was another Bear who was eliminated in a tiebreaker, losing 7-6 in the first set, allowing Goldsmith for FGCU to finish the match from there. FGCU takes a 3-0 lead in the all-time series against the Bears, including a second straight shutout.
