BBC correspondent Jonathan Agnew slams gender-neutral terms, batter and batsman, Adelaide Oval scoreboard

BBC correspondent Jonathan Agnew slams gender-neutral terms, batter and batsman, Adelaide Oval scoreboard

BBC correspondent Jonathan Agnew has condemned the use of gender-neutral terms in the game of cricket.

Agnew, who will leave his role later this year, expressed his disappointment at the use of words such as 'batsman' instead of 'batsman' in commentary and in the cricketing world.

The changes in terminology returned in 2021, when Marylebone Cricket Club replaced “batsman” with “batsman”.

The MCC, which monitors the rules of the game, said the change was made to keep pace with the growth of both men's and women's cricket.

However, Agnew says he is fed up with feeling like he cannot use the terms he grew up with for men's cricket.

“I just think it's sad,” Agnew told The Sunday Times.

“Inclusivity is great, but come on. I hate 'batter'.”

“I always call a female batsman a 'batsman'. But why can't a man who plays the men's game be a batsman?”

Agnew also discussed his thoughts on the Ashes and questioned why the trophy, which has been competed for by the England and Australian men's teams since 1882, is also being awarded to the women.

The Women's Ashes have been around since 1998, according to Agnew

“That doesn't mean the Ashes have to be the 'men's Ashes',” Agnew said.

'People will call me an old fart, I think… It's an event. It has happened. It's not the 'Men's Battle of Hastings', is it?'

Meanwhile, England bowler Kate Cross slammed the suggestion to reintroduce the term 'batsman', fearing it would isolate women keen to take up the sport.

“It's just a word, of course. But it's a word that could potentially turn a young girl away from the sport because she feels like the door isn't open to her,” Cross told The Cricketer.

At home, Adelaide Oval's iconic scoreboard was the latest to make the switch from the word 'batsman' to 'hitter'.
