Men's tennis season ends in semifinals against NJIT
SAN ANTONIO, Texas The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team's run in the Southland Tournament came to an end Friday night when they lost 4-0 to the NJIT Highlanders at the McFarlin Tennis Center.
NJIT broke through early on flight one and gained a service break advantage. The duo of Wil Jenkins and Pablo Perez Ramos held on for the rest of the match to secure the first point of the evening for the second seed. NJIT also posted a 6-3 win on flight two doubles.
In singles, German Lopez Andujar avoided break points and took the first set on flight six. He then got going quickly in set two, winning 6-3, 6-2. The next win came on flight five when Oscar Callo von Platten took his first set 6-2 and earned a late service break in the second. After a service hold, Von Platten took a 6-4 decision in the second set.
The Highlanders got the decisive point from Perez Ramos. He and Marcel Volz went back and forth throughout the second set that seemed destined for a tiebreak. Once it got there, it was Perez Ramos who narrowly won 7-5 to take NJIT to the Southland men's final on Saturday.
The remaining three games were on the line. Lucas Joujan And Marc Mail were tied at a set apiece and both men won the first game of the third set. Matthew Armbruster was a set down after falling on the short end of a tiebreak, but he was on serve at 4–4 in the second set when the match was decided.
New Orleans ends their season at 7-10 with a roster featuring Volz, who won Southland Player of the Year twice, Joujan who caps a decorated four-year career with All-Southland honors in singles and doubles, and two All-Southland doubles. ploughing.
