IUP women's tennis earns No. 2 seed in NCAA Atlantic Regional; is acting as host this week
INDIANAPOLIS —The IUP women's tennis program was listed as the second seed and host for the opening round of the 2024 NCAA DII Atlantic Region Tournament as the full championship field was announced Monday evening.
No. 49 IUP won its fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament championship last weekend with a 4-2 victory over Slippery Rock at Bloomsburg University. It marked the sixth conference title in the past seven seasons for IUP, which boasts a 14-8 overall record and 10 straight wins.
The NCAA Division II Championship field consists of 48 teams, including 21 automatic qualifiers and 27 at-large selections. IUP is one of 16 regional host sites across the country for the preliminary round matches, which will be held May 10-11.
IUP will face No. 7 seed Shaw for the second consecutive season on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m.
Slippery Rock/Millersville takes place on Friday, May 10 at 2 p.m. The winners of the two matches will face each other on Saturday, May 11 at 1:30 PM
In bad weather the schedule may be changed.
Charleston (W.Va.) is the top seed overall in the Atlantic region and will also host a portion of the regional series against winner Mercyhurst/Fairmont State while earning a first-round bye. The winning teams from each location, two schools from the Atlantic region, will advance to the finals held May 20-24 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
This is the 13th NCAA tournament berth in the past 15 seasons for the Crimson Hawks, who made nine straight appearances from 2010 to 2018. IUP earned the automatic berth after winning the PSAC Championship for the fourth consecutive season.
