The Indian table tennis team loses to the US in the opener
India lost 8–3 to the United States of America in their opening Group 1 match in the first phase of the competition ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2024 table tennis tournament in Chengdu, People's Republic of China on Sunday.
With veteran campaigners like Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran opting out of playing in the tournament, a young Indian table tennis team competes in Chengdu.
In the first mixed doubles match, India's Snehit Suravajjula and Poymantee Baisya lost 2-1 (12-10, 11-8, 4-11) to America's Naresh Nandan and Ke Tiffany.
Yashaswini Ghorpade and Jeet Chandra also lost their singles rubbers by similar 2-1 margins against Sally Moyland and Xiangjing Zhang respectively.
While world number 88 Ghorpade was stunned by a score of 11-9, 11-8, 7-11 against 186th ranked Moyland, world number 312 Chandra went 11-9, 11-9, Down 7-11 against Zhang. Ranked 465th in men's singles.
In the ensuing men's doubles rubber, Snehit Suravajjula and Jeet Chandra lost 2-0 (11-9, 11-9) to end a disappointing day for the Indian table tennis players.
As per the tournament format, each rubber, whether singles or doubles, consists of three games. The first team to win eight games wins the overall team competition.
India have been drawn in Group 1 for the first phase of the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2024 featuring reigning champions and top seeds China, Australia and the US. After the round-robin matches, the top two from the group will advance to the second phase of the competition.
The Indian table tennis team will take on hosts China in their next match of the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2024 on Monday.
The ITTF Mixed Team World Cup is in its second edition after the opening tournament was also held in Chengdu last year. Host nation China emerged as champions while India failed to progress past the first stage.
