Wayne State University Appoints New Vice President for Technology Commercialization – Research and Innovation

Taunya A. Phillips has been appointed vice president for technology commercialization for research and innovation at Wayne State University.

DETROIT – Tawnya A. Phillips has been appointed vice president for technology commercialization for research and innovation at Wayne State University.

Phillips will lead efforts to revitalize the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office, including strengthening the protection and commercialization of intellectual property developed at Wayne State and advancing innovation and entrepreneurship efforts in support of the University's strategic goals and Prosperity Agenda. Her guidance will support the University's efforts and efforts toward advancing Michigan's competitiveness in 21st century commerce and cultivating a campus that is “open for business” through creating meaningful solutions to societal challenges.

Under his leadership, Phillips will guide the university's goal of increasing invention disclosures by 50 percent over the next five years, while also growing its portfolio of patents, licenses and start-up companies, which will position Wayne State to better support innovation and economic growth by translating the university's research findings into marketable products and services that have a societal impact.

“We are pleased to welcome Tawnya Phillips to Wayne State University to help realize important research outcomes for our faculty and students,” said Dr. Ezemenali M. Obasi, vice chancellor for Research and Innovation. “Her expertise and experience will play a key role in revitalizing our technology transfer and commercialization operations, which are critical to fostering a new innovative culture at the University. Through her leadership and involvement in Tech Town, she will guide our technology transfer and commercialization team to advance important faculty discoveries and ultimately improve our impact in the innovation ecosystem.”

“We are excited to partner with Tawnya Phillips to leverage Tech Town's expertise to accelerate early-stage tech ventures and create value for more startups at Wayne State University,” said Ned Stabler, Tech Town's vice president of economic development and president and CEO. “Through partnerships and by fostering innovation, we continue to invest in the pipeline that turns ideas into reality.”

Ms. Phillips has nearly 20 years of experience in technology commercialization. Most recently, she served as the Director of the Technology Commercialization Office at the University of Kentucky, where she led a group of 18 technology transfer professionals responsible for identifying, protecting, marketing, and licensing the university's published intellectual property. During her tenure, she helped build and foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem through the Launch Blue startup accelerator, which helps to generate scalable deep tech startups from the university and local community. She also led various technology development support programs, including Mentor-in-Residence, the CATalyst Proof-of-Concept Fund, the UK Women Innovators Network, and Fellows and Ambassador programs for students.

Prior to joining the University of Kentucky's Technology Commercialization Department, Dr. Schneider directed the Minority Engineering Program and was a lecturer in mechanical engineering at the university. He spent 12 years in engineering and management positions at Milliken & Company, an industrial manufacturer in Spartanburg, South Carolina, specializing in flooring, textiles, chemicals and healthcare solutions. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kentucky.

“I am excited to join Wayne State University and contribute to the university's mission of driving innovation and economic growth,” Phillips said. “By fostering a collaborative environment, we can translate groundbreaking research into impactful solutions that benefit society and enhance Michigan's competitiveness in the global marketplace.”

Phillips is expected to join the university on August 1, 2024.

After retiring in January, Dr. Joan Dunbar has returned to Wayne State University to help reinvigorate the Office of Technology Commercialization and select a permanent leader.

“We are incredibly grateful to Joan for returning to her previous role and helping to bring technology commercialization operations back into the Research and Innovation department,” said Obasi. “Her willingness to offer her expertise and support, along with welcoming Taunya, have paved a solid path to help grow the important work of our technology commercialization staff. Thanks to her guidance, we are making great progress and we are incredibly grateful for all she has done.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
