Japan strives to avoid power outages in Tokyo after earthquake led to grid extension

Japan is scrambling to keep the lights on in Tokyo on Tuesday, as freezing temperatures and power plant cuts in the wake of last week’s powerful earthquake put the Japanese capital at risk of blackouts.

The situation across the Tokyo area is “extremely tight,” and there could be partial power outages if supply shortages persist, according to an official with Tokyo Electric Power Holdings Inc. He added that there are currently no plans for a power outage.

The country’s Industry Ministry has warned that the city’s energy supply is expected to fall below the level of demand in the evening.

The ministry called for more efforts to conserve power, saying that it may need to make stronger requests to users depending on the situation during the day.
