Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 struck Wine Country, California, north of Santa Rosa, the US Geological Survey reported.

The first 4.4-magnitude quake struck 3.4 miles deep about two miles north of Santa Rosa at 6:39 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, according to the US Geological Survey.

A second quake of 4.3 magnitude at the same depth struck at 6:40 p.m. 2.5 miles north of Santa Rosa, according to the US Geological Survey.

More than 6,400 people from as far afield as Fresno and the Simi Valley reported feeling the quake with a magnitude of 4.4, the agency said. About 175 people reported the second earthquake.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the earthquakes caused cracks in storefronts, caused items to be removed from shelves, and damaged water and gas lines in Santa Rosa.

“I turned off the stove and said, ‘I think I’ll work,'” Marshall Santa Rosa Paul Lowenthal told the publication.

“It swings and rolls for longer than I care. Hope everyone is doing well,” read one of the Twitter posts.

“Growing up in the Bay Area, I’ve had my share of earthquakes. Including 1989. But I’ve never been afraid until today,” another post on Twitter read. “We felt this #4.4 earthquake, whose epicenter was 4 miles away, so violent and so loud that we felt like something had happened. My legs shook for 10 metres.”

The scale measures the energy released by the earthquake source, says the USGS. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes of between 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt but rarely cause significant damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes less than 2.5 degrees are rarely felt by most people.
