Pause in Kīlauea volcanic activity continues though earthquake swarm: Maui Now

Geophysical signals recorded by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicate that a magma breach occurred beneath the summit of Kīlauea between approximately 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. HST on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

As of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the seismicity has returned to its background levels, ground deformation has stabilized, and no lava has been observed at the surface.

“A resumption of volcanic activity at Kīlauea summit no longer appears imminent, although it is possible that another intervention or resumption could occur in the near future with little or no warning,” according to an update from the Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

HVO reported that a shallow earthquake swarm was detected beneath the summit of Kīlauea volcano between 10:30 and 11 a.m. HST on March 11, 2023. The swarm was followed by a magnitude 3.4 earthquake located 4 km south of Volcano, Hawaii, at a depth of about 1 km (0.6 mi). ) at 11:50 a.m. GMT. The quake was felt locally and caused rockfalls near Uēaloha (Byron Ledge) in Hawai’I Volcanoes National Park, according to HVO. The seismic activity diminished around 12 p.m. HST and has since returned to background levels, according to an HVO update.

HVO inclinometers have been recording an inflationary signal at Kīlauea summit since March 7, indicating magma buildup below the surface. HVO reports that the expeditions also coincided with an earthquake swarm on Saturday morning. The slope of the summit has leveled off since around 12pm GMT on Saturday, although slow inflation continues.

The pause continues in volcanic activity that began about five days ago and Kīlauea remains on WATCH alert and flight code ORANGE.
