Appalachian State professor deciphers recent earthquakes in North Carolina

Boone, North Carolina – Seven earthquakes have hit North Carolina in the space of a few weeks, all centered outside of Canton.

Scott Marshall, a professor at Appalachian State University, has been studying earthquakes for years and sheds light on what happens in the mountains.

“I find it exciting to study something about which so much is still unknown,” said Scott Marshall.

He says they can make long-range predictions by studying those that actually happened like the last earthquake in Sparta in 2020. The quake caused a lot of damage, including the tear in the ground that buildings went through and an active fault line.

“A force 3 size won’t do that,” Marshall said. “A lot of miles. It’s a little deeper than the events in Sparta, so it’s very unlikely that we’ll see any actual surface blow off of something so small,” Marshall said.

Marshall wasn’t surprised to see a lump. He says that these are dependencies. They started on May 5th.

In the 1970s, Marshall says, there were about 50 earthquakes a year. Now, there are about 150 earthquakes. He says this may be because we are able to detect earthquakes better now and says most earthquakes are not felt by humans.

“If there is a Scale 7 in this area like there was in South Carolina, the fact that we’re a few hundred miles away doesn’t matter. We’re going to shake a lot. Knoxville is going to shake worse, but we’re still going to get hurt,” Marshall said.

He says it’s important for people in North Carolina to be prepared.
