Japan is marking the 13th anniversary of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident

People across Japan are remembering the lives lost during one of the country's worst natural disasters. Monday marks 13 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. This event killed thousands and caused a major nuclear accident, which has yet to be resolved.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:46 pm on March 11, 2011, off the coast of the northeastern Tohoku region. It caused a tsunami more than 10 meters high, destroying Japan's Pacific coast.

Authorities say more than 22,000 people are missing or killed, including those who died as a result of conditions caused by the disaster.

The devastation forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes. To date, more than 29,000 people are still unable to return.

The tsunami also swept through the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing a triple meltdown.

Last year, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, began discharging treated and softened water from the facility into the sea. The water is diluted to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh the WHO guideline level for drinking water.

The International Atomic Energy Agency found that the release complies with international safety standards.

TEPCO now hopes to remove fuel debris from the reactors. It is described as the biggest challenge, and the process was recently delayed for the third time.

TEPCO seeks to completely decommission the site by 2051. But multiple setbacks have cast doubt on that timeline.
