He explained the recent earthquakes as “aftershocks” from an earthquake that occurred months ago

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – The Oklahoma Geological Survey says there is a good explanation for why the metro continues to feel earthquakes. They are aftershocks related to two large earthquakes earlier in the year: a 4.4-magnitude near Edmond in January, and a 5.1-magnitude in Prague in February, said Jake Walter, a state seismologist.

“We can expect the aftershocks to continue for several months,” Walter said.

He added that there were at least 2,500 aftershocks in Prague and more than 150 in the Edmond/Arcadia area.

Most of these no one can feel, Walter said. The Oklahoma Geological Survey can measure more aftershocks in the Bragg area because it has more equipment focused on that area, he said.

It remains a mystery as to the cause of the first January earthquake in Edmond.

“We are still examining the available data,” Walter said. “Each of these fault zones actually has a long history of activity.”

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said it stopped allowing sewage disposal in the area near Edmond years ago, after earthquakes began shaking the subways. However, it was allowed near Prague. After the February earthquake there, OCC immediately requested a halt to wastewater disposal. They told KFOR that their inspectors frequently check the area and have not seen any illegal operations.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey said it is also monitoring waste disposal activities. “We confirmed this through our independent analysis of their data sets,” Walter said. “We are continuing to see a decrease again in earthquake magnitude and frequencies.”
