Scholars doubt the new theory on the betrayal of Anne Franks

Emile Schrijver, director of the Amsterdam Jewish Cultural District, said he received a preliminary copy of the book late last week. Evidence is too scarce to charge someone, he said. This is a big accusation they made using a load of assumptions, but it really is based on nothing more than a piece of information.

By Tuesday, after experts on Anne Frank, World War II and the Holocaust had a chance to review the findings, many said they doubted the book theory.

They came up with new information that needs to be further investigated, but there is absolutely no basis for a conclusion, said Ronald Leopold, executive director of Anne Frank Homes. He added that the museum will not present the findings as facts, but perhaps as one of several theories, including others that have been considered over the years.

The betrayal of Anne Frank says van den Bergh had a list of hidden Jews he had received from the Amsterdam Jewish Council, an organization on the board of which he once sat. The Nazi administration in the Netherlands established the council in 1941 to control the Jewish population, appointing its leaders from other Jewish organizations they banned. Council employees were stamped on identity cards that prevented their deportation, until 1943, when the organization disbanded and its employees were arrested.

But there is no evidence that the council had any such list, said Laurien Vastenhout, a researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, who is an expert on the history of the Amsterdam Jewish Council. Why would the hidden people give the Jewish Council their addresses? said Vastenhout.

Leopold, director of Anne Frank House, said he had heard rumors that the council might have kept the address lists, but only from unreliable sources. He added that the Jewish Council was under special surveillance by the occupying forces and that it would be very, very dangerous to keep such lists.

Van Twisk confirmed that his team has not found a list. But, he added, we have some sources that mention the existence of lists.
