Charlottesville, Virginia (WVIR)-Many experts advise to upgrade masks as Omicron variants continue to spread. As more drugstores around Charlottesville sell them, doctors are recommending you get them.
“The important thing is that they are more widely available than they are today,” said Dr. Bill Petri of UVA Health. “In the early days, N95 or KN95 masks were reserved for medical professionals.”
Petri now says they are recommended and encouraged by everyone because they are accessible.
“I just want to double down everything I was doing before,” Petri said.
Charlottesville locations, such as Timberlake’s drugstore in downtown Charlottesville, offer this form of protection.

Ultimately, doctors say it’s better than not wearing a mask at all, but you need to be careful based on your personal risk factors.
“They are better at removing viruses than surgical masks, and surgical masks are better than cloth masks,” Petri said.
Experts say the best chance to avoid this new variant is to use a high filtration mask.
“Our rates in Virginia are also rising really dramatically now,” Petri said. “It’s a very real risk of getting Omicron.”
Physicians also recommend step-by-step mitigation strategies, especially with Omicron. This means vaccination, boosting, wearing masks, and avoiding crowded gatherings.
