According to Teresa Quant-Callender, a pediatrician at Community Hospital Anderson, about 20-30% of people in Fuscher suffer from seasonal allergies.
Both allergies and COVID-19 can cause runny nose, stuffy nose, malaise, and coughing. However, there are many ways to distinguish allergies apart from the symptoms of COVID-19.
Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as seasonal allergies, usually does not show a fever like COVID-19.
“Usually there is a fever with COVID and allergies, but usually not,” said Stephenie Mellinger, administrator of the county’s health department.
Quant-Callender said that common symptoms of allergic rhinitis that distinguish it from COVID-19 include redness, tears, or itchy eyes, sneezing, mouth or nasal itching. These symptoms are not common with COVID-19. However, the reaction varies from person to person.
If someone usually has a runny nose or other symptoms at a particular time of the year, this is also a good indicator of whether they are allergic or infected with COVID-19.
“Symptoms of allergic rhinitis tend to be caused by environmental exposure that can occur seasonally or year-round,” Teresa Quant Calendar said in an email interview with Herald Bretin.
Often, with children, they are unable to effectively explain their symptoms. Children were least likely to be infected with COVID-19 at the onset of the pandemic, but if they had symptoms of “COVID-19”, they were still isolated.
Mellinger often does allergy tests, so it is advisable to contact your doctor or pediatrician. Knowing the pattern of allergies can help you determine if your symptoms are related to COVID-19 or allergies.
Finally, Melinger suggested that a simple COVID-19 test can help determine if symptoms are associated with COVID-19.
The COVID-19 test will continue to be available at the Madison County Health Department until June 30. After June 30th, when all state-supported testing sites are dissolved, Melinger proposes to obtain a home testing kit.
