New guidelines call for intervention and treatment of early childhood obesity, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Kelsey Clemens, a pediatrician at Gundersen Health System, says childhood obesity in her field is defined as being within the 95th percentile of BMI or weight. An estimated 14.4 million adolescents are currently obese.
Clemens said joint problems and diabetes may be due to obesity later in life.In the short term, children can be bullied because of their weight.
She feels that the best examples of how children can improve their health can be found at home.
“For children looking to improve their health, we always think that working to lower their BMI and making healthier choices starts first and foremost with their caregivers or parents,” said Clemens. “This is something the whole family works on as a team and works together.”
Clemens added that he wouldn’t consider drug treatment a treatment for a patient until the patient was 12 years old.
