HIV stigma remains widespread in the U.S.
Mexico City (Thomson Reuters Foundation)-Although nearly 9 out of 10 Americans still believe they are biased for HIV, 59% think it’s important to be aware of people who are HIV-positive. A study published Monday revealed.
Half of the 2,506 American adults asked in a survey by media advocacy group GLAAD and the drug company Gilead believed that they were knowledgeable about HIV and believed that six in ten could be treated.
“People living with HIV today live long and healthy lives… but the prejudices they face are too long leading to harmful discrimination,” said GLAAD President and CEO. Sara Kate Ellis in a statement.
“The HIV problem has gone unnoticed, but with advances in treatment and prevention, there is an urgent need to educate the public about the facts about HIV today.”
According to the United Nations, as of 2018, approximately 1.2 million people live with HIV in the United States.
HIV-induced AIDS deaths have fallen sharply since the peak of the pandemic in the mid-1990s, affecting less than 8,000 Americans each year.
There is no cure for HIV, but the virus can be treated with antiretroviral drugs and will not be detected if the blood copy number is too low to appear in a standard blood test.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people taking HIV medications as prescribed have virtually no risk of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners.
Despite this, 59% of Americans, including more than half of LGBT+ Americans, have agreed to “be aware of people who are infected with HIV and be careful not to get HIV”. I will.
Only about one-third of the survey respondents say that someone living with HIV “does not need to talk to others” about their condition.
About half of all Americans, and 40% of LGBT+ Americans, say they feel uncomfortable with having an HIV partner or spouse.
“This new survey gives us valuable insight into the role stigma plays as a barrier to care,” said Amy Flood, senior vice president of public relations at Gilead.
“The solution requires the cooperation of the entire community to fight this epidemic.”
GLAAD research was done online between November and December last year.
