Breast cancer survivors share what you can do to be proactive
FAIRWAY, Kan. (KCTV) – You've probably heard about breast cancer screening recommendations, specifically about what age you should start getting a mammogram. One local woman learned that cancer can develop much earlier. She and another patient encourage others to talk to their doctors sooner rather than later.
We've all heard that 40 is the magic number a woman should start getting mammograms every year. But not knowing about it can increase your risk of breast cancer, so talk to your doctor now to find out.
Janice Thomas never expected her doctor to tell her she had breast cancer in her 50s.
“There is no record or history of breast cancer in my family,” Thomas said. “So I didn't want to accept that fact at first.”

The first phone call was too much to handle.
“I actually hung up on the woman and stood up,” Thomas recalled. “I had no idea where I was walking and just started walking. I was in a state of shock and couldn't believe it was me.”
Meera Patel is a prime example of breast cancer lurking in women at a young age. She was diagnosed at age 33. Even doctors weren't sure if the lump in her breast was cancerous.
“At first I thought it might be a milk duct or something, but I wasn't worried,” Patel said. “I insisted on getting a second opinion and it turned out I had breast cancer.”
Since 2020, breast cancer cases have increased annually in all but one state: Missouri and Kansas. However, all these detections have not led to a reduction in the number of deaths. Jan and Meera say regular mammograms and early detection saved their lives.
“I encourage women to go for a mammogram and catch it early,” Thomas urged. “It certainly has an effect because early protection was one of the key factors in my survival.”
“You can't go through life not knowing what's going on with your body,” Patel added. “So always keep your annual reports up to date and get your blood tests done.”
Don't forget, this year's Progress Against Breast Cancer event will be held outside the Crown Center on October 26th at 9am. All funds raised will go to local causes supporting patients currently battling breast cancer.
