Many child abuse cases can remain unreported during a pandemic

(HealthDay)-Child abuse reports dropped sharply during the coronavirus pandemic. This is an embarrassing sign that social distance constraints may mean missing thousands of cases, new research suggests.

According to a survey conducted by the Children’s National Alliance, Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country serve 40,000 children nationwide during the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year. Washington Post report.

According to a survey, more than 192,000 children served in the center in 2019, with more than 152,000 assistance in 2020, a decrease of 21%.

But the decline can never be seen as good news, said Teresa Fuizal, executive director of the Alliance.

“There is no reason to believe that the actual incidence has dropped,” she said. “What we really believe is that we have 40,000 fewer children not saved from abuse.”

“What we were afraid actually happened,” Heusal said Position..

Also, the numbers from centers that receive referrals from child protection services and law enforcement agencies do not take into account all child abuse reports nationwide, so the damage can be more extensive. One third of counties in the United States do not even have access to child advocacy centres. Position report.

More than two-thirds of child abuse cases have been reported by teachers and other local experts, according to the newspaper. Educators alone were responsible for 21% of the 4.3 million referrals submitted to child protection services in 2018, according to federal data. However, as many schools, day care centers and summer camps are closed, vulnerable children are less likely to come into contact with adults who may find signs of abuse or inaction. Position report.

My parents were overwhelmed when the school year started

To make matters worse, another new survey finds most parents feeling overwhelmed and abandoned as the school year begins.

Only one in seven parents say their children will return to school full time this fall, with most children needing distance education support. New York Times A survey released on Wednesday was found. Still, four out of five parents, no matter whether they were relatives, neighbors, nanny or tutors, said there was no help in the effort. Also, more than half of parents say they bear this burden while controlling their paid work.

Of course, when both parents are wage laborers who need to work outside the home, they cannot be in two places at a time. However, according to a survey of more than 1,000 parents who voted between August 4 and August 8, three-quarters of these parents found that they oversaw their children’s education and almost half raised their children. Said it was a plan.

Of the parents who both worked remotely during the pandemic, 80 percent also deal with parenting and education, the study showed. One in five are considering hiring a tutor or tutor to support distance learning.

“All options stink” Kate Averett, a sociologist at the University of Albany in New York who has been interviewing parents since spring, Times.. “I have a lot of stress and anxiety. My parents say they are so worried they can’t sleep or are crying. There’s a lot of actual crying during the interview.”

Meanwhile, two more universities joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, announcing the cancellation of face-to-face instruction. Position report. The University of Notre Dame said the switchover would last at least two weeks after relocation on Tuesday following the first week’s surge of coronavirus cases on campus.

Notre Dame will also close public spaces on the campus and restrict dormitories to residents. Students who lived off campus were excluded from campus, the newspaper reported.

Michigan State University also changed its rescheduling plan on Tuesday, telling students that two weeks later they shouldn’t return to start the class. Position report.

Persistent immunity to COVID-19 found in early trials

The good news is that scientists this week report that people who have only mild symptoms of COVID-19 are seeing persistent immunity to the coronavirus.

Many studies have shown that, like B and T cells, which are virus-recognizable, disease-fighting antibodies appear to persist for months after the infection has progressed. Times report.

“This is exactly what you want. Everything is there to have a fully protective immune response,” said an immunologist at the University of Washington, one of the new studies currently under review. Author Marion Pepper said. By journal Nature..

“It’s very promising,” said Sumita Ayer, an immunologist at the University of California, Davis, who studies the immune response of rhesus monkeys to coronaviruses. Times.. “This requires some optimism for herd immunity and potentially a vaccine.”

Researchers can’t predict how long these immune responses will last, but experts are the first evidence that the body is likely to fend off coronaviruses if the data are re-exposed to coronaviruses. Experts think.

“It’s actually working as expected,” said Deepta Bhattacharya, an immunologist at the University of Arizona. Times.. Bhattacharya is the author of one of the new studies published at medRxiv, a preprint server for health research that has not yet been peer-reviewed.

By Thursday, the number of US coronavirus cases exceeded 5.5 million According to 173,000 solar eclipse Times Aggregate.

According to the same tally, the top five states with cases of coronavirus as of Thursday were: More than 584,000 Florida. Over 582,000 Texas Nearly 432,000 New York. There are over 227,000 people in Georgia.

A country confronting a pandemic

In other parts of the world, the situation remains difficult.

India has passed England for the fourth highest death toll from the coronavirus in the world, second only to the United States, Brazil and Mexico. Position report.

By Thursday, according to John Hopkins, by Thursday, more than 2.8 million cases had been confirmed in India, killing about 54,000. Britain is still the worst hit country in Europe, Position report.

Brazil is also a hotspot for coronavirus pandemics, with more than 3.4 million confirmed infections by Thursday, according to Hopkins tally. This is the second most common case after the United States.

Cases are increasing rapidly in Russia. As of Thursday, the country reported the fourth highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, with Hopkins accounting for nearly 940,000.

Even New Zealand, a country with no new coronavirus infection, survives for 100 days.

This week, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Adern said the country’s general election scheduled for September 19 was postponed a month earlier, Position report. The move comes as New Zealand tackles the new wave of COVID-19 infections and has prompted a return to blockade restrictions in parts of the country.

According to Hopkins, the worldwide reported number of infections exceeded 22.4 million on Thursday, with more than 788,000 deaths.
