Hospitals concerned as Utah sets new records for COVID-19 cases
Salt Lake City — Utah health officials say the state has set another one-day record for an increase in COVID-19 cases from the day before Thursday.
The Utah Department of Health reported 1,501 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. This is a total of 81,947 new records since the outbreak began.
But, according to Dr. Emily Spivak, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Utah, concerns go beyond basic numbers. She said the ICU capacity was quickly filling up in her hospital.
“This morning, our intensive care unit was 95% full,” Spivak said. “We are capable and people are essentially working to build the capabilities of other intensive care units and migrate other units, but for us, and this reflects on me. All we have to do is maximize the system. ”
Currently, 237 people are hospitalized for COVID-19 in Utah. Eighty-six of those patients require intensive care unit treatment. Health officials say that 73% of all ICU beds are used throughout the state.

In the case of COVID-19 in Utah, there is a high 5% chance of hospitalization. That is, nearly 95% do not need hospitalization and about 1% need ICU care. Another 1% require mechanical ventilation, data show.
Dr. Angela Dan, a state epidemiologist in Utah, said: “When the flu season comes and other respiratory illnesses come in the fall, do we eventually need to move to critical standard treatment?”
Utah reported five more deaths on Thursday in patients aged 45 to 85 years and older. Three of them were residents of a nursing home. The other two were neither long-term care patients nor hospital patients.
State officials estimate that 60,220 of the COVID-19 cases that have occurred in Utah so far have “recovered.” That is, the diagnosis was more than 3 weeks ago and the patient has not died.
