Mastocytoma is a very common tumor found in veterinary clinics. Mast cells are a type of white blood cell found in many tissues of the body. Mastocytoma is diagnosed when a veterinarian collects a small sample of the mass using a needle called a fine needle aspiration biopsy.

This sample is then stained and evaluated under a microscope. Mast cells have a very special appearance. They are round and the granules are darkly stained. All masses containing suspicious cells should be removed and sent out for histopathology (assessment by a pathologist).

When the mass is diagnosed as mastocytoma, the veterinarian puts the pet in benedryl and a gastroprotector until the mass is removed. After removal, the mass is sent to the lab for evaluation and grading. Once the score is back, the veterinarian will discuss the next steps based on what the histopathologist finds.

Low-grade tumors with no evidence of metastasis may be cured by surgery alone. In the future, low-grade tumors may recur or other masses may appear.

High-grade tumors are more aggressive and are more likely to spread or recur. For high-grade mastocytomas, it is advisable to consult an oncologist to develop an optimal behavioral plan for your pet.

They will want to evaluate your pet’s involvement in ultrasound imaging of lymph nodes and organs. A combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and / or radiation therapy is used as treatment, depending on whether metastases have been found.
