Storm Kathleen, a deep Atlantic low pressure system, will sweep across western England by Friday night, with clear skies throughout Saturday.

A frontal system with associated rain will bring heavy rain to all areas except the central, eastern and south-eastern regions overnight, with showers developing around noon on Saturday.

Winds will strengthen overnight and a widespread weather warning will be in place from 8am to 10pm. Wind gusts of up to 70mph are expected across exposed western areas and the east coast of Northern Ireland. Large waves are also expected.

It will be a very windy day for all, but central and western regions will certainly experience the strongest winds.

What will the temperature be this weekend?

As the south wind blows strongly, temperatures will rise significantly above the seasonal average, especially in the southern region.

Combined with sunny weather in East Anglia, Saturday could see temperatures reaching 21C or 22C for a while. This is the highest temperature seen in the UK since last October.

How about next week?

Although much less windy than the weekend, unsettled conditions are expected to continue into early next week with more wind and rain in many areas.

After mid-week, conditions are expected to split, with low pressure continuing to bring changeable weather to the north, while high pressure will bring a drier, brighter picture.
