Springfield, Illinois (AP) — Illinois officials are urging residents to carefully check for ticks on themselves and their children after spending time in the woodlands this spring.
The Illinois Public Health Service has announced that May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Mites carry debilitating and sometimes fatal illnesses such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis.
Removing mites in 24 hours reduces the risk of illness. Instructions on removing mites and recognizing symptoms are available on the IDPH website.
You can monitor the number of ticks in your area with the IDPH tick monitoring mapping app.
Authorities say they wear light-colored clothing to help find mites when visiting areas with forests, tall grass, or brushes. Walk in the middle of the trail and avoid the leaves. Wear a suitable insect repellent.
Thoroughly check the tick’s body every few hours, and when you get home, put your clothes in a tumble dryer, bathe within 2 hours, and store the ticks found on your skin in rubbing alcohol or a sealed bag. Then take it to your healthcare provider or submit it to your local health department.
