Turkey: the crisis of TP Hatay's candidacy underlines the bankruptcy of the pseudo-left orientation towards the bourgeoisie
The Stalinist Workers' Party of Turkey (TP) withdrew its candidate for Hatay mayor, Gkhan Zan.
The crisis erupted under conditions in which the TP widely cooperates with the main bourgeois opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), in local elections. The most striking example of this collaboration is the CHP's support for TP leader and Istanbul MP Erkan Ba in Gebze, one of Turkey's most important industrial centers.
Hatay, as the city that suffered the greatest destruction and loss of life in the February 6, 2023 earthquake, encapsulates the criminality of capitalism and the bourgeois political establishment. More than 23,000 people were officially killed and more than 30,000 injured because necessary precautions were not taken against the expected natural disaster.
The responsibility of the current CHP Mayor of Hatay, Lft Sava, and his party, as well as the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, for this avoidable disaster was clear. By renaming Sava in the March 31 elections, the CHP confirmed its complicity in this crime.
On March 17, the TP announced on social media that it was withdrawing its support for rival candidate Zan, a former national footballer who ran as a parliamentary candidate for the far-right Good Party last year. We have received various allegations that Gkhan Zan, who was proposed as a joint candidate by the Hatay Alliance, was involved in relationships that our party would never tolerate, TP said in a vague statement.
Audio files allegedly belonging to Zan, which were sent to the party leadership and then leaked to the press, allegedly recorded officials of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) negotiating bribes with Zan in exchange for his refusal to withdraw from his candidacy. Both parties deny the conversation took place.
Zan had already announced in February that the mafia had offered him bribes and threatened to withdraw from the elections. He said in a press release in response to these latest events that he and his family had been threatened by Savas men and subjected to a campaign to discredit him with false audio recordings. It was widely reported that the CHP candidate was afraid of losing the election because of Zan's campaign.
The scandal is the product of the TP's unprincipled collaboration with the CHP, a bourgeois right-wing pro-NATO party. In last year's presidential elections, the TP supported Kemal Kldarolu, candidate of the CHP-led National Alliance. Kilicdarlolu ran an explicitly pro-NATO campaign and formed an anti-refugee, anti-Kurdish alliance with the far-right Victory Party in the second round. Despite this, the TP, the Kurdish nationalist Party for People's Equality and Democracy (DEM Party) and many pseudo-left tendencies continued to support Kldarolu.
The TP election campaign this year ignores the US-NATO imperialist war against Russia in Ukraine, the NATO-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on containing and suppressing growing social opposition and the leftward shift of the working class and youth with the illusion that the capitalist system is reformable.
On this basis, the TP selected candidates through unscrupulous bargaining for seats in the CHP, the DEM party and various pseudo-left organizations.
Besides Zan, many people who had been officials or candidates of various parties across the country, such as the Kemalist CHP; the Democratic Left Party (DSP), which supported Erdoan in last year's elections; the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), separated from the AKP; and the Erdoans, de facto allies of the Vatan party, ran for the TP in the local elections.
CHP leader zgr zel summed up this unprincipled alliance earlier this year: We worked with TP in the following way. They did not nominate candidates where the CHP was neck and neck and where it was likely to lose.
Erkan Ba ran for mayor of Gebze, a neighborhood with a large working-class population. We support him there.
But in Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, in districts and places where TP has not nominated a candidate and where we are competing, TP voters will support the Republican People's Party in exchange for this gesture in Gebze.
Zan's candidacy for the TP in Hatay contradicts Zel's statement that the TP would not field candidates in places where there was a risk of defeat for the CHP.
An opinion poll conducted between February 23 and March 5 showed that Zan would get 12 percent of the vote, building on popular opposition to the despised bourgeois parties, especially after the earthquake. If the hated Sava had been re-nominated, enough votes could have shifted to cause the CHP to lose the election in Hatay.
Indeed, the leader of the CHP, zgr zel, declared in an interview published in Size According to the newspaper of March 17, the TP candidate could make us lose the elections.
As unscrupulous as the TP was in nominating Zan, it was also unscrupulous in withdrawing his candidacy. In an interview with T24 on March 19, TP leader Ba said the following regarding Zan's claim that the audio recording was a montage: Of course, I'm not very familiar with technical details. This will be revealed after a criminal investigation, but he says it was done with a practice they call deep fake, but in some conversations he also makes statements to our friends like If I don't win this election I should think about my future.
Now, if Gkhan Zan claims to have been framed, he will have to prove it, Ba said, echoing the international pseudo-left's contempt for the presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial, as evidenced by the reactionary campaign # MeToo. .
On March 25, TP Istanbul MP Ahmet K published an expert report which he said confirmed the audio recordings. This report, which has no official legal value, shows that the recordings were sent to this expert on March 19 and 20. The TP removed Zan from his candidacy on March 17, even before the accusation was confirmed by this so-called expert and based on a recording submitted by people of questionable credibility.
In his response to Ahmet k, Zan made the following statements regarding the report submitted as evidence: Mr. Ahmet k stated that he had the recording reviewed by a person who claims to be an expert; this report does not belong to any organization, it belongs to a person who does not even know if they have sufficient technological equipment. The report they claim has no validity. We requested that this examination be carried out by the Forensic Medicine Audio and Video Examination Specialization Board, the most competent organization in Turkey, and this is the only report that can be trusted.
The recordings were allegedly received by the TP about a week before the incident, and Zan added: “I have officially made my statement regarding the criminal complaint. [on March 17] at 9:19 p.m. The TP, on the other hand, declared that he was withdrawing his support from me an hour later, at 10:39 p.m., after learning that I had filed a criminal complaint. In fact, it had also delayed and made me wait to file a criminal complaint in the days before.
