PM Modi slams opposition for consuming meat during Sawan month
Over the past few days, social media platforms, especially X, have seen right-wing supporters criticize opposition leaders and media personalities for posting photos or videos of them consuming non-vegetarian food . Their claim was that this was intended to hurt Hindu sentiments during the period of Chaitra Navratri, which falls between April 9 and 17.
This criticism found support from none other than Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched an attack on Congress on Friday (April 12), accusing it of disrespecting Hindu sentiments by consuming meat during the holy month of Sawan . Speaking at a public rally in Udhampur, PM Modi referred to a viral video and said: Who do you want to make fun of? Eating non vegetarian during Navratri days, showing video and hurting people's feelings, who are you trying to impress by playing this game?. He went on to say that videos of people consuming meat are intentionally posted in order to harm the beliefs of this country.
Although the Prime Minister did not give any names, he was probably reacting to a viral video posted in September 2023, in which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Lalu Yadav were seen cooking mutton together.
However, the Prime Minister's statements were harshly criticized by a section who accused him of trying to divide people based on their food choices. Some even took digs at the BJP by pointing out a video of their Tamil Nadu party chief Annamalai telling veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai that he would join him for chicken.
It is worth noting that according to the recent National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data, 83.4% of men in India and 70.6% of women in the age group of 15-49 years consume daily non-vegetarian foods.
