Nancy Pelosi criticizes Liz Truss and Boris Johnson
Nancy Pelosi criticized former British Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Boris Johnson for supporting Donald Trump's return to the White House in the upcoming presidential race.
Pelosi, the former speaker of the US House of Representatives, made the remarks during a Sunday interview on BBC One with Laura Kuenssberg.
“I don’t know what they’re talking about,” Pelosi said, visibly exasperated. “Maybe it’s in their best interest to talk about it.” She dismissed Truss and Johnson's claims about the supposed security of Trump's presidency, expressing confusion over their claims.
Truss, who succeeded Johnson, claimed earlier this month that the world was safer under Trump's leadership, emphasizing the need for a “strong America” under the presumptive Republican nominee. Johnson, often compared to Trump himself, echoed similar sentiments in January, suggesting that Trump's return to power could be good for the world.
Pelosi, however, remained steadfast in her support of outgoing President Joe Biden's re-election bid. “I didn’t know they said that, and I’m sorry, but it’s safer for what?” Pelosi questioned. “Safer for taxes? Safer for people who don't like people of color and LGBTQ people, as well as women in growing situations? »
She continued her criticism, questioning the notion of security propagated by Trump supporters. “Safer for what, safer for white people, safer for white men? Why is it safer? Pelosi questioned, pointing to Trump's history of controversial remarks targeting women, the LGBTQ+ community and people of color.
Drawing on her roots in Baltimore, Pelosi invoked the symbolism of the American flag as a representation of democracy and justice for all. “And this flag is our symbol of democracy, with liberty and justice for all, without tax breaks for the richest people in America or discrimination against people of color. Liberty and justice for all,” she said.
The animosity between Pelosi and Trump is well-documented, with the former president tearing up a copy of Trump's State of the Union address during his time as speaker, condemning it as a “manifesto of untruths.”
