Women's tennis falls 4-2 to Pacific in regular season finale
PORTLAND, Ore. The Portland women's tennis team earned a 4-2 decision against the Pacific Tigers on Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Portland finishes the regular season 10-11 overall and 3-5 in WCC play. The Pilots honored the team's four seniors during a pre-match ceremony as Iva Zelic, Rimona Rouf, Rose Watanabe and Jojo Bach made their final appearances at LPTC.
Despite the loss, the Pilots have qualified for the 2024 WCC tournament, which will be held April 23-25 at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University. The top six teams in the WCC standings qualify for the tournament. Portland will be the No. 6 seed and will get a rematch against No. 3 Pacific in Thursday's opening round.
Portland had the early advantage on Saturday with solid double play. Rouf and Alaia Rubio Perez defeated Megan Carmichael and Indiya McLeod 6-3 in third position. Zelic and Sally Pethybridge then took the point with a 7-5, comeback victory at No. 1 doubles against Klara Kosan and Tomi Main.
The Tigers (13-6, 4-2) earned straight set wins over No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take a 2-1 lead, but Zelic took a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Kosan at the top of the line-up, tying the score at 2-2.
Portland took the opening sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles courtesy of Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Rouf, respectively, but the Tigers fought back to win both matches in three sets for the overall team victory.
