Top tennis player Jannik Sinner tested positive twice in March for a banned anabolic steroid and was stripped of prize money and points earned at a tournament in Indian Wells, California. But he will not be suspended because an independent tribunal said it was not intentional.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the case on Tuesday.

Sinner won the Cincinnati Open on Monday and is one of the favorites for the US Open, which starts next week in New York. Sinner made his debut at No. 1 in the ATP rankings in June and is considered one of the top stars of the new generation in men's tennis, along with Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner, an Italian who turned 23 on Friday, won the Australian Open in January for his first Grand Slam title. He reached the semi-finals at the Roland Garros in June and the quarter finals on Wimbledon in July, before he Olympic Games in Parisand said he had tonsillitis.

During the Indian Wells hardcourt event in March, Sinner tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of Clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid that can be used for ophthalmic and dermatological purposes. It's the same drug the San Diego Padres star is taking Fernando Tatis jr. was suspended by the MLB.

Eight days later, Sinner tested positive again, with a sample taken out of competition.

In a statement to CBS News, Sinner's team said the tennis player had “less than a billionth of a gram” of the substance in his body during the test.

He was provisionally suspended due to the test results, but he successfully appealed and was allowed to return to the tour.

Sinner's team said the positive test occurred because his fitness trainer purchased an over-the-counter Italian product containing Clostebol so the tennis player's physical therapist could treat a small wound on Sinner's finger. The physical therapist did not know the product contained Clostebol, Sinner's team said. The physical therapist treated Sinner without gloves and that “combined with multiple skin lesions on Jannik's body caused the inadvertent contamination,” the statement said.

The ITIA said it accepted Sinner's explanation and found that the breach was not intentional.

According to the ITIA, an independent panel held a hearing on August 15 and found no fault or negligence in the case, resulting in a period of debarment.

According to his statement, Sinner still lost points from the Indian Wells tournament where the test took place.

“I will now put this challenging and deeply unhappy period behind me,” Sinner said in the statement. “I will continue to do everything I can to ensure that I remain compliant with the ITIA Anti-Doping Program and I have a team around me who are scrupulous in their own compliance.”
