Thousands of Missouri residents take part in “ShakeOut” in the Greater Central United States | News

(Kamland) – Missourians may not think much about earthquakes, but experts say it’s important to be mentally prepared.

This morning, hundreds of thousands of Missouri residents will take part in a “check out” earthquake preparedness exercise in the central United States.

At 10:20 a.m., participants will “drop, cover and hold” in a drill that simulates expert advice on the safest way to avoid injury in an earthquake, by avoiding falling debris. The exercise involves falling on your hands and knees, covering your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can, and holding until the shaking stops.

Jeff Briggs, director of the earthquake program at the Missouri Emergency Management Agency, said an old saw about getting into the entrance during an earthquake is not a safe approach.

Briggs noted that “getting to the entrance means you have to run across a room, exposing yourself to falling debris.” “This means that you do not cover your head and move under something to protect yourself from falling debris. It also means that if there is a door in that entrance, it could swing and hit you. Therefore, there are many reasons why entering the door is not the safest thing to do.”

Briggs also noted that most homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage.

The earthquake threat in Missouri is associated with the New Madrid seismic zone in the southeastern part of the state. USGS reports since 1974, thousands of small to medium earthquakes have been recorded by seismographs in the New Madrid region.

Briggs added that the New Madrid region was responsible for some of the largest earthquakes in the country.

“Some of the largest earthquakes in US history have occurred here in southeastern Missouri,” Briggs explained. “If another major event like this happened, people would feel it for hundreds of miles in every direction. In fact, 200 years ago, there were written reports of feeling shaken along the East Coast.”
