CHICAGO, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) discovered on Oct. 10 a suspected measles case in Cook County.
First reported by the Cook County Department of Public Health, the individual with measles was unvaccinated and exposed internationally. IDPH confirmed details from laboratory results on Oct. 11.
Measles is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. After an exposure to measles, symptoms can take from 7 to 21 days to appear.
This case’s rash onset was identified as Oct. 9 – their infectious period would then be between Oct. 5 through Oct. 13.
Likewise, measles can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain).
However, most people are routinely vaccinated in childhood. Therefore, they’re not at high risk for receiving the illness. However, those unvaccinated are at risk.
“Two doses of measles vaccine are 97% effective in preventing measles. However, as we saw this week, it still can affect those who are unvaccinated,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.
For those who believe they’ve been exposed, check with local health care providers about protection through prior vaccination or need for current vaccination. Contact health officials before going inside an office or emergency department.
Before this, the last identified measles case in Illinois was 2019.
