Boy at immigrant shelter dies from sepsis and infection, authorities say
Chicago (CBS) — The cause of death of a 5-year-old boy who was living at an immigrant shelter in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood in December has been determined.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office reported Friday that Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero died of sepsis due to an infection with Streptococcus pyogenes, the bacteria that causes strep throat.
Infection with COVID-19 and two other viruses that cause colds and upper respiratory symptoms – adenovirus and rhinovirus/enterovirus – were also contributing factors, the coroner's office said.
The manner of death was natural.

Jean Carlos and his family were staying at an immigrant shelter at 21st Street and Halstead Street.
On Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17, police announced that Jean Carlos was not feeling well. He was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital from a shelter near Cermak Road and Halstead Street in Pilsen. He was pronounced dead there.
The Martinez Rivero family had been in Chicago just five days before Jean Carlos' death.
Jean Carlos He is survived by his parents and his two-year-old brother Isaias.
