Italy blocks reopening of ski resorts over concerns about virus mutations in Britain
On Sunday, the Italian government blocked the opening of a ski resort, which was scheduled to be skied for the first time this winter, due to coronavirus regulations.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement that Minister Roberto Speranza had signed a bill to extend the ban on recreational skiing at resorts until March 5.
This decision was made after new data from the nation’s top health agency, the ISS, showed that British variants of the coronavirus now account for an average of 17.8% of new infections in Italy.
“Similar measures have been taken in France and Germany due to concerns about the spread of this and other variants of SARS-CoV-2,” the ministry said.
The resumption of the ski season has provided great relief in the northern regions of Italy. Just four days ago, authorities said the ski resort would be allowed to reopen after receiving favorable advice from a panel of experts advising on the Covid-19 pandemic.
It was the first time this season that skiing was allowed after several weeks of coronavirus-related closures.
