The Northwest falls to rival Illinois

In its final conference road game, Northwestern was looking to earn a much-needed victory against in-state rival Illinois. However, the team led by coach Arvid Swan came out sluggish, losing 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (8-16, 2-5 Big Ten) struggled to find their rhythm on the outside, and the Fighting Illini (14-8, 4-3 Big Ten) quickly took advantage.

On the first court, senior Saiprakash Goli and freshman Nick Herdoiza were easily defeated 6-1 by former five-star recruit Lucas Horve and Tyler Bowers.

Illinois continued its torrid streak, clinching the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead on court two, where the “Cats” duo of senior Presley Thieneman and freshman Greyson Casey s lost 6-4 against Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi.

Once the game moved to singles play, NU's woes continued as the Fighting Illini swept all six courts to secure a resounding 7-0 victory.

Despite not securing a singles point, several members of the Swan team, including Casey, showed resilience in their matches.

After losing the first set 7-5 to freshman Jeremy Zhang, Casey bounced back in impressive fashion, winning the second set with an impressive score of 6-1. In the third set, Casey took on Zhang but ultimately fell just short, with the Illinois freshman earning a 6-4 victory.

The 'Cats will look to end their two-game losing streak on Friday when they host Indiana at the Combe Tennis Center.
