Miguel Mena: Jockey killed in pedestrian accident

Churchill Downs said Mena — whose full name was Jose Miguel Mena Rodriguez — was killed on I-64 westbound between Blankenbaker Parkway and Hurstbourne Lane.

Jeffersontown Police said Mena was hit by a vehicle after 7:30 PM on I-64 westbound near Hurstbourne Parkway. He was pronounced dead on the spot. No charges are pending, police said.

The Jefferson County coroner’s office ruled in a press release that Mena’s death was an accident and stated that he died of blunt force injuries.

“This news is absolutely shocking, terrible and heartbreaking,” Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack, said in a statement. “Our team is devastated to learn of Miguel’s passing. He was such a brave rider who fought to overcome various challenges and setbacks.

“We will miss his radiant smile. Our deepest condolences go out to his many friends, fellow riders and family, and our direct thoughts are with his wife April and his daughters Naelah and Montserrat.”

The two-time winner of the prestigious Stephen Foster Stakes won 2,079 races in North America and competed in 16,234 races, bringing in $72,483,396 in prize money, according to the track.

Mena reached the milestone of 2,000 wins aboard the Royal Commission at Ellis Park on July 4, 2020.

Born in Lima, Peru, Mena came from a horse racing background, Churchill Downs said. His father, Jose, was a jockey and his uncle, Humberto, is a trainer.

At the age of 11 Mena started taking care of horses. He came to the United States at age 17 and, according to the track, would win his first North American race at Calder Race Course in 2003.

In the fall of 2006, the Peruvian started riding at Churchill Downs, where he would go on to win 481 times, taking 15th place all-time.

According to Churchill Downs, his last ride was at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, last Saturday.
