MDARD encourages biosecurity as bird flu spreads in West Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Bird flu, also known as “bird flu,” is on the rise in West Michigan. The total number of infected farms in our region has increased to four, but all in different counties.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) said avian influenza, officially known as H5N1, has been around for years.
“This is a very serious virus that is highly contagious and has been circulating in the industry for several years. So our response to it is not particularly new.”
MDARD's response is biosecurity, a practice that has been well known in the agricultural industry for many years.
Biosecurity involves isolating farmed poultry and cattle to reduce exposure to wild birds that can carry the virus, similar to tactics used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MDARD says bird flu has been detected on farms in Ionia, Isabella, Montcalm, Newaygo and Ottawa counties.
Other states, including Kansas, New Mexico and Texas, are also currently dealing with bird flu. But there are special cases in Michigan that make the virus even more alarming.
“Michigan is one of the few states in the nation that is addressing this issue, both on the dairy side and the poultry situation,” explained MDARD Director Tim Bowling.
Meanwhile, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has not reported any cases of human infection with avian influenza, but everyone should still be careful, especially when working with animals.
“Our big concern is whether there is human-to-human transmission,” added Dr. Jennifer Morse, medical director for the Mid-Michigan District Health Department. “Remember that you need to be safe during these activities, and teach your children how to stay safe.”
She warns that if bird flu infects humans, a new pandemic could occur.
“If humans are infected with human influenza and infected with avian influenza at the same time, the viruses could mix and start a new pandemic,” Morse explained.
“Please be careful and monitor the health of your livestock,” Bowling added.
